Tilda Publishing Review

Tilda is a WYSIWYG website builder, mainly focused on landing pages and longreads  creation. What is interesting about it? To start with, it comes with an appealing design. It goes without saying that the service ultimately adheres to its presentation – its interface has minimalistic, fresh and creative look. It triggers the feeling of prospectiveness and desire to work with it. The first impression is quite pleasant.

Business websites, blogs,online stores – the website builder allows creating the same types of websites as the rest of the services. But that’s not the main thing about it. The focus was initially made on the creation of landing pages – one-page websites featuring publicistic content. The target audience includes journalists, storytellers and marketing specialists.

But what can Tilda counterpart to its business niche competitors? Does it come up to its creative presentation and do the websites made with it really stand out from the crowd and look appealing? Does it make sense to invest into it in the long run? If so, then who will benefit from using the service most? Or, maybe, it is still better to pass by it? Let’s show all the pros and cons of the website builder to be able to make the final decision afterwards.

1. Ease of Use

Tilda does not differ a lot from other WYSIWYG website builders, when it comes to the dashboard organization. Everything is quite simple and understandable here as well, you won’t encounter any surprises. The interface is logical and visually-appealing, it does not cause any questions. This is a perfect variant for newbies. Most of the actions can be done with a few mouse clicks only.

Tilda Editor

Tilda can boast a nice tutorial, educative videos and articles. This is where you will find out not only the way the system works, but also the samples of effective application of its options on certain examples. This is a typically convenient niche product, which features user-friendly interface and quality support section. When it comes to the ease of use, everything is pretty standard and nice here.

2. Feature Set and Flexibility

Tilda allows creating a large number of website types, but you can seriously use it to build any websites except for online stores and blogs. Yes, there is a shopping cart, online payment acceptance methods,  various types of product cards here, but only inexperienced users can apply these options to build small web stores. The number of settings is limited. It looks nice, but that’s it.

The blog is devoid of a separate post management panel. This automatically eliminates the interest to it as to the individual functional unit. Yes, you can publish posts as an addition to a business website just to gain power by the niche text for good promotion by the key phrases. However, we definitely don’t recommend Tilda for launching and managing a full-featured blog.

So, what we have is business websites with multiple pages, landing pages (one-page websites). These are the most obvious and suitable areas of application of the service’s options. We have to mind the prevalence of the platform’s specialization.

Tilda Blocks Library

The developers of the system have done much for comfortable landing page management here. This includes the block-based structure and abundance of ready-made text/multimedia sections, broad text style customization, section formatting options etc. You can present your product in a beautiful way here.

Tilda’s Dashboard

Organization of the working area is classic in Tilda – there is the dashboard to manage general project settings, switch between them and use a visual editor to create pages. There is also an option for bulk web page publication and order preview. You can set up website display on Facebook, scrolling animation and responsive mode for smartphones.

Tilda Dashboard Settings

The settings for each project available in the dashboard allow connecting payment services, Google Analytics, domain name, export a web page to PC, select services to create online forms, CRM, mailouts as well as to restrict website access via IP, integrate head code, add RSS feeds and activate lazy load to speed up  web page loading. To simplify the process of working with the system for newbies, each project comes with FAQ links and useful tutorials.

The real Tilda highlight is its WYSIWYG editor. You have to make up pages in it from more than 450 ready-made sections (not widgets/elements, but blocks), right after which their design and available content can be set up in details. It’s logically to assume that the broad spectrum of website options depends to a large extent upon the sets of sections offered.

By clicking the “+” sign between the template sections, you will see a full list of sections with blocks. These include header, project description, title, abstract, image, gallery, direct speech, columns, advantages, divider, menu, web page list, video, online form with a button, web store, team, schedule, stages, plans, partners, social networks, footer and many more.  Each section contains a large number (at least, a dozen) of differently designed block.

As soon as you add a section to a page, you can edit the content it contains (text, change the image, button signatures, product characteristics etc.) and set up its design: upper and lower spacing, background color, display effects, element alignment, block height, opacity, typography, background video and many other effects depending upon the section type.

There is also an opportunity to change the sections on the go and replace them with the other themes from the same category in the scrolling mode with a preview. This is convenient. Basic operations of block copying, cropping and inserting are also supported. Apart from this, there is a block map. This is a small copy of a web page needed to preview its structure and quickly reach the sections.

Tilda Font Settings

Fonts stand out from the crowd here – you can choose the sources in the settings (Typekit, Google Fonts, Basic Fonts or the one of your own). It is possible to set up  text font weight, size, headline font weight and colors for each type of font for each sample. All these elements will help create stunning text design. Anyway, Tilda is a website builder, which is mainly about visual content and its presentation.

Zero Block

Zero Block stands out from the crowd – this is the interface for manual creation of sections from various elements. This is one of the system’s highlights. By positioning the text, making color accents, arranging images or videos in a certain order, you will get a unique block. There are multiple design settings here – spaces, layers, alignment, colors, obscuration, rotation, dimensions etc.

Zero Block Editor

Thus, Tilda doesn’t limit user’s imagination. You can plan and store as many individual blocks as you need to further use them on all the websites built with the system. Separate attention should be given to the sections with niche functionality. These are a web store and social networks. You cannot modify their options here.

An online store, by the way, doesn’t look outstanding. It works great for advertising and selling of a limited number of products. You will get an appealing show window with a block-based structure, featuring 3 products per a line, a description and online order form in the pop up windows. This all looks pretty nice, but, unfortunately, the system lacks functionality in this respect.

Extra Zero Block Options

Extra options are realized by means of integrating external services. They are subdivided into categories, namely CRM (PipeDrive, MegaPlan, amoCRM, Bitrix24), mailouts (GetResponse, MailerLite, MailChimp, SendinBlue, UniSender) and more (Google Forms/Sheets, Slack, Webhook, Zapier, Telegram, Trello). The set of third-party services has medium functionality, diversity and size. You can set up any service in the website settings, if you have corresponding accounts there.

What’s more, you will be able to add other services/elements to your website by integrating a HTML/CSS/JavaScript block. If you need to add a PHP code, you’ll have to do that via Webhook by adding a code to your server. This is somewhat inconvenient, but this is the only way to do that. Generally, you can integrate dozens of services to your website with HTML only, but you should know where to look for them.

Apart from obvious options, Tilda has special offers for a limited target audience. These include an opportunity to create your own sections, well-realized text management and code integration processes that grant access to a broad spectrum of functional tools.

3. Designs

All the ready made Tilda templates are one-page themes based on the sections available in the editor. They come with demo content with regard to the thematic context and look standardly well. In other words, websites have design, which is modern, popular and presented as a set of repeated responsive templates with content.

Page Templates

When you choose a template, you mainly select a homepage. How should it look like? The system offers the following categories: business, blog, online store, poll, contacts, events, inner pages. Each section has around 10 variants of web page structure. That’s not a problem. You can personally create such compositions in any preferred amount – just choose a blank page and design it from scratch.

Tilda page templates

Right after you choose a homepage to launch a multi-page website, you’ll have to manually add the required number of pages one by one to further add the links to them in the website menu. On the one hand, it is convenient to be able to manage each web page separately. On the other hand, the idea is not the best one. You need to stick to the only website style. That’s why, it is better to launch extra pages from scratch. This will appeal mainly to experienced creatives.

Deep Design Customization

It should be reminded that there is also the Zero Block, which comes with extensive design customization options of separate blocks. Nonetheless, whatever you do, you won’t be able to make serious impact upon website design because of the general conception of the service. However you can create a completely unique page using Zero Block. The content will mainly define how interesting your website will be. The rest will be used as a nice decor for it and not more.

Tilda Design Settings

The thing is that to successfully apply all these layers, detailed font settings, spaces, shades, obscuration and other suchlike elements, you have to possess at least a bit of web design skills. The majority of users will ignore a half of design customization options of the service. The same is about the fonts – it is easy to get lost here, getting strange result. If you have skills and nice taste, then you will find multiple interesting ways to diversify your website design when working with Tilda.

The idea to use one-page templates is interesting in its own way, while individual addition of web pages with separate settings for each of them is also a benefit for designers and experienced marketing specialists. Zero Block and font customization are extra bonuses. Nonetheless, it would be nice to see multi page templates here, even though, this contradicts the overall conception of the website editor.  Obviously, Tilda is a website builder that is not meant for everyone. Some newbies will find the system complicated as there are many unclear things about it.

4. Customer Support

Tilda comes with a perfect knowledge base that can help newbies solve around 99% of unclear situations without contacting the tech support team. The tutorial is so detailed that it looks sometimes weird. Extra lessons and articles will provide you with the variants of practical application of the service’s options.

For those users, who need more than just a text part, the developers of the system regularly upload videos of webinars with the samples of website creation process, the use of separate features, ways to solve certain problems etc. The tech support is realized via the email or via online chat. The latter you can access by pressing ‘Send us a message’ button in the editor area.

5. Pricing Policy

You can use Tilda on a Free plan for the unlimited period of time. It is possible to create a multi-page website without connecting your own domain, but with the limited block number and a number of uploaded files, the volume of which cannot exceed 50MB. To make use of the entire feature set of the system, you can choose between two plans (annual subscription):

  • Personal ($15/mo), which implies the creation of 1 website, 500 web pages, 1 GB of disc space, full set of features. When making a one-time annual payment, you will avail a bonus domain, an opportunity to disable the «Made on Tilda» label in the website settings.
  • Business ($20/mo), which allows creating 5 websites, 500 pages and make use of the initial code export.

Tilda works well for launching simple landing pages, portfolios and multi-page business websites for companies and entrepreneurs. The cost of the plans is above the average in the niche. However, due to the opportunity to launch 5 projects, Business Plan looks a more appealing option for everyone, who has an intention to create several small websites. Those who need more than 5 websites to operate, should use Tilda Pro plan (up to 20 websites).

6. Pros and Cons

Having tested Tilda, we have a bit confused impression about it. On the one hand, the service has a pleasant, stylish interface with nice ergonomics, a large block library and flexible customization options. On the other hand, it lacks a part of features to compensate which you’ll have to integrate third-party services. Technically, that’s not a problem, code integration is supported, but you may face the necessity to subscribe to the plans of the services you plan to connect. These are extra financial expenditures.

Tilda mostly focuses on landing pages and lead generation process. This is a specific accent, which meets the requirements of an average entrepreneur. Businessmen and marketing specialists will certainly be excited about it. You can create appealing landing pages, and be able to use integrated mechanisms of conversion analysis and statistics collection.

Tilda is an appealing website builder. When you explore it, you have the desire to use it. You get the feeling that the result of working with the website builder are impressive – the websites are stunning, versatile and promising.

The obvious system benefits include:

  • Code integration support and the use of extra services;
  • Zero Block – the integrated section builder;
  • >Convenient editor, multiple block management variants;
  • Advanced website typography settings;
  • Intuitive interface with appealing design;
  • Website file export option, which allows easily migrate to your server or your WordPress website;
  • Great knowledge base section.

As to the disadvantages, we can mention the following:

  • Too powerful focus on integration with the functionality of extra services;
  • Poor large blog opportunities, which does not work well for regular publications.

So, we return to the very beginning. Tilda really works great for building landing pages and portfolios. Creating business websites on Tilda is also a good decision. But you have to possess at least a bit of web design skills – the templates are one-page and you’ll have to design the majority of web pages manually. The website builder will come up to the needs of creatives.

Tilda has decent look. It creates the feeling of a perspective service that can boast a broad spectrum of options. Such impression is partially justified. However, it’s not quite smooth on practice. You can design stunning landing pages with exquisite titles and impressive media part. You can also collect website stats and track your leads.

Blogs and web stores look appealing here, but it’s complicated to manage them. Regular post publication, their search and sorting are complex as well. The same is about the products – the more of them you have, the more complicated it is to manage them.

Tilda will appeal to designers, marketing specialists, journalists and users with aesthetic sense, who can give their works stunning design. The detailed layout set up will be a bonus for creatives. If you belong to this group of users, then you will find lots of interesting in terms of the platform.
