If you follow Google’s Business blog, TheNextWeb or any other technology media, you no doubt heard about the launch of .SOY, Google’s new domain name. The new domain means ‘I am’ in Spanish, and is intended to be a place on the web specifically for the Hispanic audience in the United States.
.SOY is a top-level domain that lets people know immediately that the website/business/individual is connected with the Hispanic community in one way or another, and that it offers content that was created specifically with them in mind. Check out the official Google video:
- the Census Bureau reported that the number of Hispanic-owned businesses in the US increased by 43.7% to 2.3 million, more than twice the national rate of 18.0% between 2002 and 2007;
- Google stats indicate that the number of web searches that include Spanish question words almost doubled during the last three years.
The new domain comes with another great benefit – it allows businesses to get domain names they needed, but had missed out on before.
